This and that for cycling fun
If you can be seen as a cyclist, many things are easier in road traffic. Bright or even reflective clothing and a well-functioning lighting system should be a matter of course. Cycle helmets also ensure that your head is not unprotected in the event of an accident. Being on the road requires a clear head, and not just on a bicycle. Alcohol and other drugs are not compatible with this. Turning maneuvers are particularly accident-prone. The blind spot when turning right or cautious behavior when turning left are things that every cyclist should be aware of. Drivers should never forget to look over their shoulder.
Cyclists must abide by all the rules of the road just like other road users. Conversely, motorists should respect cyclists as equal road users. In addition to keeping sufficient distance when overtaking cyclists, this naturally also includes keeping cycle paths and cycle lanes clear. If you park here, you are deliberately endangering cyclists as they have to swerve onto the road. The minimum distances for overtaking bicycles (1.5 m in urban areas and 2.0 m in rural areas) laid down in the German Road Traffic Regulations should be a matter of course for all motorists. If there is not enough space to overtake, patience is required.
A pedelec is a great thing. It's easier to cover longer distances than without the electric tailwind. But such a pedelec should also be controlled. Older people in particular have problems with this. The motor causes the bike to accelerate very quickly. When coming to a stop, a small step on the pedals makes it leap forward again. This can be quite dangerous for inexperienced riders. That's why senior citizens should first complete a pedelec training course before enjoying their newfound freedom with battery power.
Unfortunately, it is often the case that a few cyclists and motorists often do not adhere to the applicable rules. As a result, they endanger and obstruct others. The police's request is actually quite simple: "Section 1 of the Highway Code is about mutual consideration. If everyone takes this to heart, there will be fewer accidents and less trouble on the roads. Mutual apportioning of blame from one group of road users to another does not get us anywhere. Insight and consideration are beneficial for everyone. The unteachable must expect consistent action by the police!"
